Economists frequently point to statistics like housing starts and construction spending to help them predict the economy. This morning we dig a bit deeper into the machinery behind those numbers — from a heavy equipment auction in Longmont, Colorado, north of Denver. For sale are excavators, front loaders and skid steers. For many buyers and sellers, what's on the block — and what it sells for — tells them something about where the economy is headed.
