Rare earth elements, used in technologies including wind turbines, electric vehicles and touch screens, are in high demand in the U.S. But China, the primary producer, is steadily scaling back its exports of rare earths. Now the Molycorp mine in Mountain Pass, Calif. -- the only commercial site of its kind in the U.S. -- is expanding its capacity in an attempt to make up the difference.
